Summer at 826

Summer

School might be out for the summer, but the learning doesn’t stop at 826 Valencia. We offer two main programs and an array of specialized workshops to keep our students’ brains humming. Just like our school-year offerings, we aim to provide programming that is rigorous and fun. As summer approaches, be sure to keep an eye on our calendar for upcoming events and workshops.

Exploring Words Summer Camp

Our five-week summer writing program is designed for current 826 Valencia 2nd through 5th graders who are in high need of academic support. The camp runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. and provides a creative writing and science exploration experience through reading, writing, and hands-on activities that strengthen the STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Throughout the camp students will conduct science experiments, provide material for a chapbook, and write with the one-on-one support of tutors. At the end of the five weeks, students will have developed a portfolio of their work. Contact Christina Perry at christina@826valencia.org with questions about the program.

Young Authors’ Workshop

This August, 826 Valencia will host its annual Young Authors’ Workshop. The Young Authors’ Workshop (YAW) is a two-week intensive writing camp for Bay Area students entering grades ten through twelve. The camp features writing workshops and seminars led by guest authors. This is a great opportunity for students to team up and, with the support of professional writers, poets, and spoken word artists, craft amazing work. The camp is open to twenty-five students attending Bay Area high schools who are excited to embark on a transformative journey as they develop their literary voices. Preference will be given to students attending SFUSD high schools.

Criteria:

  • Enthusiastic young people entering grades 10 through 12
  • Students excited to participate in a creative and supportive community of peers
  • Students who find writing a challenging task and are interested in developing their writing skills

The 2015 Young Authors’ Workshop will run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 27 – August 7. Applications will be available on April 7, and due May 8. Check back here for application details, or contact Molly Parent at molly@826valencia.org with questions about the program.

Summer Workshops

We also amp up our selection of evening and weekend workshops during the summer months, which, as always, are free of cost. Keep your eye on our calendar for upcoming workshops, because they do tend to fill up quickly during the summer.
