In August 2010, singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant came to 826 Valencia to work with Bay Area high-schoolers on the art of songwriting. Merchant not only offered wisdom on craft, discussing the nuts and bolts of rhythm and language, but also talked with students about songwriting as a way to express themselves and share things through music and lyrics.
