Material Memoirs at Burton High School
In the project "Material Memoirs," students will explore the journey of daily consumer products and household items from their origins as resources to manufacturing to retail and eventually into the hands of the people who use/own them. Using personal narrative techniques, students will be writing memoirs in the voice of select products in order to tell the stories of how they came to exist, comment on the impact their creation had on the world’s people and resources, and suggest the meaning of their existence. A note from Mr. Chow, our long-time partner teacher on this project: My ELD students are mostly newcomers with varying English and academic abilities, and most speak Chinese or Tagalog. They like to talk among each other, and there are always the few who always participate in class discussion. Besides going over their writing, the tutors would be a great help in engaging them in social and academic conversation in English. The curriculum for this project is based on collaboration with World Savvy’s Media and Arts Program (MAP). World Savvy, a global education non-profit organization, sponsors the Media and Arts Program in San Francisco and New York City and culminates with a celebration and gallery opening of the student participants’ works.
