Volunteer Training: Strategies and Tools to Empower and Motivate Students

(General Event)

Feb 8,2013, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ 826 Valencia Street, San Francisco, Ca. 94110
Have you ever worked with a student who has been reluctant to share their work with you? Have you ever felt as though you weren’t making the breakthroughs you’d like? Have you wanted to find a way to sustain the progress you’ve made with a student? If you’ve answered “yes,” to any of these questions, please join us for our inaugural volunteer training, “Strategies and Tools to Empower and Motivate Students,” with Kavitha Lotun. In this training, volunteers will examine tricky scenarios that they may encounter or have already experienced in supporting students and share in a rich discussion about the triumphs of tutoring in all areas of 826 Valencia’s educational programming and its complexities. It’s also an opportunity for volunteers to learn about best tutoring practices and leave with the beginnings of a powerful and inspiring volunteer toolkit. In order to reach the widest audience of volunteers, we’ve planned this training to take place on two different days and time windows. Please join us for one of these sessions. RSVP as soon as possible, as space will be limited! About the training facilitator: Kavitha Lotun is a longtime educator and 826 Valencia volunteer whose background with education and pedagogy spans nearly a decade. Mrs. Lotun has worked in classrooms in Vancouver, British Columbia, London, England, and San Francisco. Mrs. Lotun earned her BA in Sociology and BA in Education from University of British Columbia.
