Publisher Houghton-Mifflin contracts 826 Valencia to compile The Best American Nonrequired Reading, a yearly anthology of fiction, essays, comics, and journalism geared for readers under age 25 (although read by just about anyone). Every week, a student committee meets to gather possible materials from national periodicals, discuss it, and then assemble the very best work into a cohesive collection. To apply, email Daniel Gumbiner at daniel@mcsweeneys.net with a short (three paragraph) essay on what you like to read and why. Include your name, age, high school, phone number, and email address.
