The Art of Persuasion

The fifth grade students and teachers at César Chávez Elementary School are looking forward to working with you during our writing workshop activities in the coming months! Our school is located in the heart of the Mission District on Shotwell street, and has a large number of Latino students. There are three fifth grade classes, with 24-25 students in each room. You will be working with many English language learners, as the majority of our students speak Spanish as their first language.

In the month of March we will be beginning our persuasive writing genre. During this unit students will be analyzing propaganda, looking at the pros and cons of various issues, and working to convince someone of their opinion. A key concept in this unit is the counter argument - they must predict their opponent's concerns and counter them effectively. Thank you in advance for your interest in supporting our students.
