Publisher Houghton-Mifflin contracts 826 Valencia to compile The Best American Nonrequired Reading, a yearly anthology of fiction, essays, comics, and journalism geared for readers under age 25 (although read by just about anyone). Every week, a student committee meets to gather and discuss materials from national periodicals, and then they assemble the very best work into a cohesive collection.
